Both central and unilateral posterior palpation will provide you with lots of information about the motion segments in the cervical spine. Careful palpation is required to pick up subtle differences between various levels and also when comparing the left to the right side.
You are looking to determine when in the range the patient experiences stiffness, pain or spasm. These techniques can also be applied in different physiological positions of rotation, flexion/extension or even side flexion.
